Strategic Communications Manager

Job Description

Overview:

The Rx Foundation, a national health justice funder based in Massachusetts, seeks candidates for a part-time, remote, Strategic Communications Manager to join our team. The ideal candidate will have skills to gather stories from the Rx network and craft compelling content using a variety of formats, platforms, and mediums, while also helping grantee partners to develop their own capabilities in this regard.

Rx Foundation is a private, tax-exempt foundation that distributes more than $2M in grants each year. Our mission is to support collaborative initiatives to promote health justice, healing and wellness in communities throughout the United States. We engage with diverse partners committed to a future in which all communities build their connections, capacity and power to address the root causes of poor health. Our current grant making strategy emphasizes building capacity for advocacy, organizing, and civic engagement, paired with a commitment to going “beyond the check” in support of our grant recipient partners.

Our approach to communications is rooted in storytelling and spotlighting the work, learnings, and impact of the extraordinary leaders, organizations, and networks that we support. We aim to align messaging with our mission and values and to amplify the impact and work of our grant partner network through primarily digital communications strategies.

Position Role & Responsibilities:

This is a part-time position, requiring a minimum commitment of 25 hours per week and flexibility for periodic travel. The work will not be based in an Rx Foundation office; thus, you must be able to work from your own environment. It will involve close collaboration with the Executive Director and the Manager of Programs and Operations, as well as Rx grantee and aligned partners. Responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying story ideas and collaborating with Rx team on quarterly and annual communications and storytelling planning
  • Systematically collecting, assessing, and organizing updates from Foundation partners and allies by attending meetings and monitoring partner reports, media coverage, publications, and their social media channels, a key goal being to identify storytelling opportunities and broader narratives
  • Attending virtual meetings and events, and occasional in-person events, hosted by the Foundation and our partner network
  • Conducting virtual interviews, with the possibility of some travel for in-person interviews and story collecting
  • Designing, producing, and distributing multimedia content including videos, social media graphic posts, website and newsletter content
  • Manage the Foundation’s social media calendar and presence (currently most active on LinkedIn), to drive engagement and boost Rx partners’ work
  • Developing and implementing an organized approach to storing, indexing, and sharing stories/assets and content with the Rx Foundation team, in the process creating a storybanking database
  • Leading the reimagining of Impact Narratives, a section of our website that highlights Rx grantee partners’ impact
  • Collaborating on written content that appears in venues including the Rx website and newsletter, as well as media articles and op-eds
  • Developing, planning, and leading workshops to strengthen the storytelling and communications capacity of the Rx network

For the right candidate, this will be an opportunity to develop strategy and systems that connect the stories and learning coming out of the Rx Foundation network with broader narratives, networks, and movements in health justice and philanthropic spaces.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and have excellent relationship-building and communication skills. Desired qualifications include:

  • Strong creative vision and storytelling ability to conceptualize and execute engaging multimedia content, including video, that aligns with our primary goal of boosting our partners’ work
  • Experience or dedication to learning about employing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and trauma-informed principles in storytelling efforts to ensure narratives authentically reflect our partners’ experiences and perspectives
  • Strong relationship-building and interpersonal communication skills to work as part of a small team and build rapport with larger grant partner network and peers
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment, valuing input from diverse perspectives and actively contributing to collective goals
  • Skills to identify and discern good stories
  • Knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their respective best practices, algorithms, and trends; as well as how to leverage them for our strategic goal of boosting partners’ work to key stakeholders
  • Strong writing and editing abilities, with a knack for synthesizing complex ideas into compelling narratives.
  • Adept at using Microsoft Office suite, Zoom, Canva, WordPress, and Associated Press (AP) standards
  • Demonstrated capacity for discretion and diplomacy

The Rx Foundation is committed to fostering the professional growth and development of our team members. As a member of the Rx team, the Strategic Communications Manager will have access to professional development initiatives, including but not limited to attending industry conferences, workshops, or training sessions. We recognize the importance of staying updated on emerging trends and best practices in multimedia storytelling, social media management, and learning to ensure that our strategic communications and learning efforts are innovative and impactful. The Rx Foundation will purchase any required equipment, subscriptions, software, memberships, or other resources that are necessary for this role.

Salary range is $65,000 – $75,000, benefits include ICHRA for reimbursement of health insurance premiums and an employer-matched SIMPLE IRA.
